Mahakaleshwar temple is a famous Hindu destination in Madhya Pradesh. This temple lies on the bank of the Rudra Sagar Lake in Ujjain. This popular temple has been mentioned in many scriptures of the Hindu tradition. The sacred deity of Lord Shiva, present in the form of lingam, is said to be Swayambhu, he is the dewing power of it. In the Mahakaleshwar temple the idol of the Mahakaleshwar is well-known as the daskshinamurti; this means that the deity is placed facing the south. There are all together 12 Jyotirlingas all over India that are worshipped, out of these 12 one is found in Mahakaleshwar temple. This temple is also sometimes called as the Mahakaal temple by the devotees.

This unique feature of the temple is upholded by the tantric custom, which can be found only here. Above the Mahakaal shrine there is an idol of the Omkareshwar Shiva is blessed in Mahakaleshwar temple. There are idols of Ganesh, Kartikeya and Goddess Parvati placed in the northern and southern parts of the temple. There is an idol of Nandi located to the south of the Mahakaleshwar temple. There is an idol of Nagchandandreshwar which is placed on the 3rd floor, which is kept open and the Darshan is available only on the Nagpanchami.

The Mahakaleshwar temple consists of 5 levels, including the basement. The temple is located in a very large area where there are huge walls close to the lake. The shikhara of this temple is decorated with sculptures on the walls of the temple. The architecture of the temple is very beautiful which is worth watching, people come to this place to visit lord Shiva as well as have a look at the ancient designs of the temple.

People believe that lord Shiva fulfills all the desired wishes. There are shops available outside the temple. They have flowers, coconuts and sweets. A devotee offers some prasad to lord and the devotee gets the prasad back. This temple was destroyed by the Mughal emperor and then this temple was rebuilt by the Sindhias.

The Maha shivratri is the famous festival that is celebrated with great enjoyment. There is a huge fair is held near the temple.
