Rameshwaram Temple in Tamil Nadu

Rameshwaram is south India is as famous as the Banaras in North India. It is a major and popular pilgrimage place in India. It is also called as Varanasi of south India. One of the 12 Jyotirlings is located here. It is honored as the most important pilgrimage center of Tamil nadu. This is the place where Lord Rama made a linga and he worshipped it.

Lord Rama had asked for the blessing of Lord Shiva as he was going to assault Ravana. Lord Rama after returning to Ayodhya also worshipped the same place.

Rameshwaram temple covers an area of about 15 acres of land. This temple has a 4000 feet's huge pillars corridor which covers 4000 pillars. This is the longest one in the entire world. One of the main features of this temple corridor is that the rock which is used to build this corridor is brought from somewhere else in Tamil Nadu. There is a Rajagopuram which is to the eastern part of the temple the height of this about 126 feet and there are altogether 9 levels to this.

The Rajagopuram to the western side is not as high as the one to the eastern side. There is a huge Nandi that is about 18 feet high and 22 feet in length. It is master piece designed in the Dravidian style. It is built in the 12th century close to the eastern side of the sea. This temple covers the major area of the Rameshwaram. This temple has about 22 well and water in each well tastes differently. This water of the well contains some medical properties in it. People visit this place to gain Moksha after their death.

    Nearest airport is the Madurai airport which is at a distance of about 163 kilometers away from Rameshwaram. From airport there are pre-paid taxis and buses that will drop tourists to the destination.

    Nearest railway stations are the Madurai station which is at a distance of about 173 kilometers away from Rameshwaram and the other one is the Chennai station. There are buses and taxis from station to Rameshwaram.

  • Road ways:

    There are state transport buses and luxury buses available from Rameshwaram to major cities like Chennai, Madurai and Coimbatore.
