Pandharpur is a very famous pilgrimage place for Hindu religion especially in the month of Ashadh. This is also known as the Chandrabhaga as the shape is in the form of half-moon. This place is also called as the southern kashi of India. This temple is devoted to lord Krishna; he is a god form of lord Krishna. This temple of Vitthal covers a large area of Pandharpur and has total 6 gates to the temple. The gate to eastern side of the temple is known as the "Namdev Gate".

Pandharpur pompously hosts the 'Kuladaivat' of Maharashtra they are Vithoba and Rukmini. Vithoba or Vitthal are considered as the ultimate god of the Entire Universe for Maharashtra and an incarnation of Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva. In the temple there are standing images of Vithoba and Rukmini. People of any religion can enter this temple and worship Vitthal by putting their head in front of his feet. This ceremony is called as the 'Pad-Sparsha-Darshan' and is a very special ceremony held in the temple. Every Wednesday is considered as an auspicious day in Pandharpur and Ekadashi as an auspicious day of the month. The idol of Vitthal is placed on a high platform.

After stepping out of the temple there are local vendors who hold stalls of flowers, coconuts, sweets and tulsi leaves as these are the items required to put forward in front of Vitthal. There are even some general stores which has items such as small idols of the Vitthal and Rukmini along with the other gods.

Pandharpur organizes 4 yatras in a year. There are as follows Aashidhi Yatra, the Kartik Yatra, the Magh Yatra and the Chaitra Ekadashi Yatra. Out of these the first two are of great importance during this time people from all over Maharashtra come to attain this Yatra with great faith in Vitthal. This Yatra is also known as Palkhis. There are thousands of people present in this Palkhis; great saints from Maharashtra come together as Warkharis. These people take a divine bath in the river Bhima and then stand in queues for taking the Darshan of Lord Vithoba.


There are lodges and cottages available as the good source for staying in Pandharpur. These lodges are of low budget as per the need of the visitors. There are hotels also which are of good ranges that can suit some of the tourists.

    Nearest railway station is the Pandharpur which has a line of Kurduwadi-Miraj of south central railway. Other close by rail way station is the Sholapur station which is at a distance of about 74 kilometers.

    There are state transport buses and luxury buses that are available from Pandharpur to all the major cities of India.
