Area and location:
The sanctuary is situated at a height of 5,091 feet, that is almost 3,375 feet above the sea level. It encompasses an area of 540 sq. km that is covered by undulating hills and valleys. It is located in Kemmannagundi in Karnataka.
The sanctuary forms an important link between the Eastern and Western Ghats. River Kaveri or Cuavery flows at the South East. It takes an abrupt turn at Kollegal towards the north and returns to its initial course.
The B R hills wildlife sanctuary is visited by a lot of tourists since its inception. There are a large number of floral and faunal species. Guars and chitals are the primary faunal species of attraction. Common langur, Spotted deer, Wild dog, Mongoose, Malabar giant squirrel, Porcupine, Bonnet macaque, Sambhar, Bears, Sloth bear, Four-horned antelope, Elephants, Panthers, Tigers, Leopard, Wild pig, Gaurs, Chitals, etc. are other faunal species.
There are a large number of winged creatures in the sanctuary like Yellow throated bulbul, Crested hawk eagle, Malabar whistling thrush, Racquet-tailed drongo, Paradise flycatcher, etc. It is recorded that more than 200 species of birds can be traced here.
Best time to visit:
September to May remains the best period when you can enjoy the wildlife attractions over here. The sanctuary remains open all throughout the year.
You can avail accommodation facilities in the sanctuary. Furnished twin bed tents with attached toilet facilities, lit by hurricane lamps would add a bit of adventure to your stay.
The nearest airport is at Bangalore that is 254 km away from the park. Bangalore and Mysore are the nearest railway stations. You can take buses from these two places also.
