The sanctuary is located in Belghar that is almost 158 km away from the city of Phulbani in the district of Kandhamal. Tribal communities who are known as Dogria Khond reside in this area. The profession of these tribes is shifting cultivation.

Main attractions:

The Belghar wildlife sanctuary boasts of a wide and exotic array of wildlife. It is located in tropical deciduous forest belt and hence houses a number of rare plant species. During the spring time, these plant species shed their leaves. Many of them can rise to great heights while others have strong medicinal and commercial values.

Apart from the floral species, you will also find many faunal species. The wild elephants are the major attractions in the sanctuary. These long tusked wild animals attract a number of tourists from every nook and corner of the state. The long tusks of the wild elephants are used to carry the heavy trunks of trees. Small herbivores like deer and aves are also found in the sanctuary.

As already mentioned, the main profession of the tribes here is the shifting cultivation. These tribal folks use the products yielded by the forests. It is very interesting to know that the local drink of the tribal people is made by mixing the juice extracted from salap and dead palm.

The months between October and May are the best time to watch the wildlife of the sanctuary.

The nearest railway station is at Phulbani that is 158km away from the sanctuary.

It is well connected to all other cities in the state. You can take A/C or Non A/C coaches from other states in order to reach Orissa. Then you have to hire private cars or other vehicles.

You will feel excited to know and watch the simple lifestyle of the tribal people. Dogria Khond and Bonda community are the main tribes residing in the area. The latter one is considered to be one of the most primitive tribes of the country.
