Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary


Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary, Idukki - Kerala

Chinnar is located in the rain shadow regions of high ranges in the Southern Western Ghats. It is located approximately 65 kms away from Munnar and is open through out the year. Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary (95 square kms) is famous for wildlife sightings. Its dry deciduous forests makes it easier to view the wildlife. Undulating terrain with rocky patches increase the scenic splendor of the sanctuary. The forest type comprise thorny scrub forests, dry deciduous forests, high altitude sholas and wet montane grasslands. Apart from this, this area is noted for its archaeological importance too. The Dolmens, built between first and fifth century CE are one f the major attractions among them.

Fauna : Elephants, Gaurs, Panthers, Spotted Deer, Sambhars, Grizzled Giant Squirrels, Hanuman Langurs, Peacocks, Star Tortoises and Travancore evening browns.

Best Time to Visit: One can visit the sanctuary almost throughout the year except during the months of October and November. Visiting time: 0700 -1800 hrs.
