Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary, Near Thodupuzha - Kerala

Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the important wildlife conservation efforts in India and definitely one of the major tourist attractions in the Indian state of Kerala. It has been constituted around 40 km away from Thodupuzha in the Idukki district of Kerala. The name Idukki has been derived from a Malayalam word 'idukku' which means 'narrow gorge.'



Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary is enlisted among the small sanctuaries in India. It is spread over the area of around 77 sq.km.in the Udumpanchola and Thodupuzha talukas of Idukki district. The altitude of the region is 750 meters above the sea level. The forest of the Idukki sanctuary lies between the two important water sources of Kerala viz River Cheruthoni and River Periyar.

The main source of water for the flora and fauna of the Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary is the Idukki Reservoir formed by the three dams: Cheruthoni, Kulamavu and Idukki. This reservoir extends to the area of 33 sq. km.

Flora:

Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary enjoys a complete ecosystem replete with flora and fauna. Essentially the dense tropical evergreen and deciduous trees form a green canopy over the land of the sanctuary. This provides a safe habitat for various species of animals. A number of medicinal plants too are found in this forest. Many of them have been registered as the rare species of herbs by the botanical experts.

Fauna:

Various types of animals are found here and watching them in their true colors is a real excitement indeed. Among the most prominent animals sighted here are, wild beasts like wild dogs, elephants, deer, jungle cats, bisons and bear. A number species of reptiles are also found here that include snakes like cobras, vipers and kraits. A number of non-poisonous snakes too are seen here.

Idukki wildlife sanctuary is a paragon for bird watching. Various species of avian army are found here in plenty. Some of the most prominent ones are kingfisher, eagles, peacocks, bulbul, jungle fowl etc.

Boating:

The beautiful lake near the Idukki sanctuary is a famous picnic spot for many. Special boating facilities are available in this lake and you will enjoy this for sure.
