Etymology:

The sanctuary is located in a place that is locally known as Kadalundi Nagaram. The Kadalundi River flows beside the area. The sanctuary derives its name from the area and the river.

Geographical features:

It is located about 19 km from Kozhikode and 7 km from Beypore Port on the Arabian Sea. It is situated in the Malappuram district in North Kerala. The sanctuary spreads over a cluster of islands in a picturesque area that is surrounded by hillocks where the Kadalundi River meets the mighty Arabian Sea.

It sprawls across an area of 3 km in a place that is locally known as Kadalundi Nagaram. The nearby hillock that is 200 m above the sea level adds to the picturesque beauty of the park. The sight of the river meeting the sea and birds flying while their foot touching the waves of the sea is simply amazing.

Main Attractions:

Kadalundi bird sanctuary holds a large number of birds compared to the other sanctuaries in the state. It is a paradise for the birdwatchers. You will watch a number of native and migratory birds. Almost 60 varieties of migratory birds find refuge here. These are Sandpipers, Terns, Herons, Brahminy Kites, Gulls, Cormorants, etc. Other birds are Black Bulbul, Kingfisher, Myna, Jungle Fowl, Laughing Thrush, Woodpecker and Peafowl.

Other than the birds, you will also find many snakes in the area like Cobra, Viper and Krait. You will also find many rare species of Fishes, Crabs and Mussels.

Karipur International Airport is the nearest airport. It is 23 km away from the Kozhikode town.
