Area and Location:

Established in April 1981, the sanctuary encompasses a total area of 444 sq km. It is just a 2 kilometers drive from Kutch District.

Main attractions:

The Narayan Sarovar Chinkara Sanctuary also known as the Narayan Sarovar Wildlife Sanctuary is marked for its unique ecosystem. A considerable part of the sanctuary is a seasonal wetland in the arid zone. This wetland is mother to 15 threatened wildlife species. The floral species of the sanctuary consists of desert thorns and scrub forests that are spotted with seasonal water bodies and grassy patches.

The vegetation of the sanctuary also displays the edaphic climax of tropical thorn forest. In this area the average tree height ranges from 3m to 5m. You will find plant species like Gorad and Babul. Gorad can be found mainly in the eastern zone while Babul dominates the western zone. It is very interesting to know that this sanctuary provides shelter to 252 species of flowering plants like gugal, baval, thor, kerdo, hermo, Carissa, gando baval, etc. The faunal species and their unusual lifestyle will surely leave you spell bound. The most important attraction of the sanctuary is the Chinkara or the Indian Gazelle. You will also find Blue Bull, Spotted Deer, Desert Fox, Ratel, Porcupine, Wolf, Hyena, Desert Fox, Mongoose, Hare, Caracal, Indian Pangolin, etc.

You will also find some variety of smaller mammals. The sanctuary houses 18 species of amphibians and reptiles, 184 species of birds, 19 species of raptors, etc. The Great Indian Bustard, Houbara Bastard and Lesser Florican are the three species of Bustards. You will find some bird species like Black Patridge, Harriers, Common Cranes, etc.
