The national parks and sanctuaries in Maharashtra are some of the most enriched sanctuaries in India. Navegaon national park in the Vidharva region bears witness to this fact. The Navegaon Lake beside this sanctuary is surrounded by seven hills known as Sat Bahini. This lake along with the sanctuary forms a picture-perfect vision that is able to captivate any traveler.

The area of the national park consists of a deer park, Dr. Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary and three landscaped gardens. Lake, hills and gardens bless the place with natural beauty that is hard to escape.

Etymology:

The national park is situated in Navegaon. It lies near the Navegaon Lake. The park derives its name from the place and the lake.

History:

The park area has an enriched history. This park was created in the beginning of the 18th century by Kolu Patel Kohli. He is now known as "Kolasur Deo" who is the presiding deity on one of the peaks surrounding the lake.

Area and Location:

The park is located in Navegaon in the Vidharva forest region in Maharashtra. It sprawls across an area of 135 sq. km. The picturesque Navegaon lake stretches over 11sq. km.

Flora and Fauna:

Southern mixed dry deciduous forests are the main vegetation found in the park. Haldu, Teak, Mahua, Jamun, Bhel, Kawat, Bhor, Ain, etc. are the predominant plant species. The hot and humid climate is favourable for the growth of such a variety of floral species.

The avifauna species include Scarlet Minivet, Paradise Fly Catcher, Kingfisher, etc. Many migratory birds come to this area. If you visit the sanctuary during the months of October to June, you will be able to watch a large number of migratory ducks in the Navegaon Lake. With all these, the national park consists of more than 60% of the total bird population in the state.

After the floral species, we move on to the faunal species. You would find a number of wild animals like Nilgais, Chitals, Tigers, Wild Boars, Sambars, Panthers,Sloth Bears, Wild Dogs, Gaurs, Langoors, etc. If you go for a jungle ride, then you can experience the best views of nature and wildlife.

When to visit?

April to May is the best time to visit the national park. The temperature is pleasant throughout the year. The park remains open from 4:00 am to 7:00 pm.

Transport Information:

The nearest airport is at Nagpur which is 142 km away from the park. The nearest railway station is just 2 km away from the park. Deulgaon on Chandrapur-Gondia railway line is the closest station.

Navegaon is the nearest bus stand that is only 10 km away.

Some other places to look for:

Watch towers are erected in the sanctuary. So it is better to watch the animals from there. You can also go for boating in the lake which is surrounded on all sides by hills.

Navegaon wildlife sanctuary is an important tourist destination. More than 50,000 tourists visit the place throughout the year. So enjoy the glory of Nature while spending some moments of joy in the park.
