Nawabganj Bird Sanctuary is one of the most prominent bird sanctuaries in India and is a favorite place of a number of Migratory birds. It is indeed one of the major tourist attractions in Uttar Pradesh. It's a great weekend getaway from Kanpur. Winter gives a call to the different species of migratory birds and this is the reason why bird watchers and photographers flock to the sanctuary as do the migratory birds.

Where is it located?

The Nawabganj Bird Sanctuary lies around 45 Km away from Kanpur. It is on the Lucknow highway.

The Sanctuary is a small one as compared to many others in the country and occupies an area of three sq. km. The sanctuary has been constituted around a lake which is a tempting and tranquil place for a number of migratory birds. Acknowledging the ecological importance of the place and in an attempt to conserve and preserve the rich biodiversity of the region, the Government of Uttar Pradesh declared it as a bird sanctuary in the year 1984.

The picturesque surroundings of the lake, greenery and scenery of the Nawabganj Bird Sanctuary make it a paragon for photography. The tourist importance of the place is unequivocal and you can see oodles of tourists and zoology students coming to the forests of Nawabganj.

With the intent of enhancing the knowledge of the visitors about the world of birds, an Interpretation Center has been established in the sanctuary. Under this initiative, some educative shows and films are screened so that people know the importance of the birds sheltering the sanctuary. All in all, a visit to the sanctuary gives you a lot.

Fauna:

  • Avian Army

    Nawabganj is an ideal site for bird watching and photography. Widely spread marshland and shallow lake bordered with mixed dry forest make the sanctuary a safe place for wildlife. The avian population here consists of local as well as migratory members. Birds from Tibet, China, Europe and Siberia come here during winters and it is a treat to watch them well before our eyes. Some of the birds travel a long distance of 5000 km well above the 8500 meters and reach Nawabganj Sanctuary. Graylag Goose, Cotton teal, Pintail, Gadwall, Shoveller, Coot and Mallard and Red Crested Pochard are the main species of migratory birds that flock the sanctuary during winters every year. The other important local and migratory birds include Sarus Crane, Spotwill, Peacock, Dabchick, Painted Stork, Open Billed Stork, White Necked Stork, White Ibis, Whistling Teal, Pheasant Tailed Jacana, Broze Winged Jacana, Tern Vulture, Pigeon, Indian Roller, Bee Eater and many more.

  • Deer Park

    In the vicinity of the sanctuary, a small park has been established which houses deer. Spotted Deer and Barking Deer are the two types of deer found here. The park is one of the major attractions in the vicinity of the Nawabganj Sanctuary.

  • Reptiles

    Cobra, Krait, Viper, Ratsnake and Water Snakes are the main reptiles found in plenty in this region.

How to Reach?

The Nawabganj Birds Sanctuary is 45 Km away from the Kanpur railway station. The nearest airport from the sanctuary is Lucknow which is around 35 km away. The sanctuary is located on the National Highway No. 25. You have regular buses and taxis plying between these places and the sanctuary and so reaching the Nawabganj sanctuary is not a big deal.

You can plan a trip to the Nawabganj Bird Sanctuary any time of the year. The climate is pleasant and good transport facilities are available throughout the year.
