Etymology:

This park is dedicated to Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of Independent India. He was one of the leading figures of the Indian Independence Movement.

History:

The zoological park was established in vide G.O.Ms. No.247, Dated 26 October 1959. It was after 4 years on 6th October, 1963 that the park was declared open to the public. Since then the park has been popularly visited by many tourists from the two cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad. The park is run by the state govt.

Area and Location:

The core area of the park is 380 acres. The Alam Tank Lake area of 600 acres also has a varied range of wild animals. Around 100 species of wild animals find refuge in this area. The park is located in the Bahadurpura area on the way to the N G Ranga Agricultural University in Rajendranagar. It is little ahead of Afzalgunj, the Osmania General Hospital and the High Court of Andhra Pradesh.

Flora and Fauna:

The predominant faunal species are Panther, Tiger, Crocodile, Python, Asiatic Lion, Gaur, Indian Rhino, Orangutan, Rhesus, Bonnet, Wolves, Hyenas, Bears, Monkeys, etc. Zebra, Deer, Antelopes, Black buck, Chousingha, Chinkara, Deer, Sambhar, Brow Antler Deer, American Bison, Elephant, Hippopotamus, etc. are the herbivores found in the Nehru Zoological park.

Primates like Chimpanzee from Central Africa, Chacma, Orangatun, Mandrill, Olive and Yellow Baboons can be sighted here.

Other than this you will also enjoy watching the reptiles and snakes like Water Turtles, Estuarine Crocodiles, Monitor Lizards, Star Tortoises, Russels Viper, Giant Rock-Python, Chameleons and Tree Snakes.

Other attractions in the park:

The park has a Natural History Museum. It showcases old artifacts and dummies of many extinct animals. There is a Nocturnal Birds Park also and it houses many exotic birds and animals. These include owls and lemurs.

It is a privilege for the visitors to watch the pre-historic animals that are kept in the Pre-historic Museum. Many of these animals existed even before the appearance of the human race in the earth.

Computerized dummies of dinosaurs and many extinct animals will baffle you. The Deer Park will also provide you pleasure. Many animals that are bred in the zoo are restocked in the Deer Parks and sanctuaries. This is done in order to restock the dwindling animal population.

Safaris and ferry rides add to the attraction of the park. Many safari trips like Butterfly Safari, Lion Safari, Bear Safari and Lion Safari make visitors take a close look of the animal kingdom. Elephant rides are also popular here.

When to visit?

The park is open from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. It remains open on all days except Monday. With a very nominal fee, you can enjoy all the wildlife attractions.

  • By rail: The major railway stations are Hyderabad and Secunderabad. These are connected with all the major destinations in the country.
