History:

The sanctuary was established on 2nd February in the year 1987. With the primary object of protecting the wildlife of the area, the sanctuary was created.

Area and Location:

The sanctuary encompasses an area of 18.53 sq. km. It is located at distance of 25 km from Agartala in a place named Bishalgarh on National Highway 44. It is in West Tripura district connecting Agartala, the state capital and Udaipur.

Main Attractions:

The main attractions of the park are:

Flora: With 456 floral species of monocotyledon and dicotyledon, Sepahijala wildlife sanctuary becomes one of the prominent sanctuaries in the North-east India. Trees of Chamal, Garjan,Sal, Kanak, Pichla, Kurcha, Awla, Bahera, Hargaja, Amlaki, Bamboos, grasses, Rauwalfia serpentine and other endemic species are the most important floral species. It is interesting to know that it has the 4489 cum per ha. of timber biomass.

Fauna: The uniqueness of the sanctuary is that it houses crab eating mongoose that was seen 72 years ago in the country. The tropical deciduous forest here becomes the source of survival for Rhesus macaque, pigtailed macaque, Capped langur, spectacled langur, slow Lories and a lot of many other wild animals like leopard, clouded leopard, jungle fowl, and civets, barking deer, wild pig.

There are a lot of residential and migratory birds which include lesser whistling teal, white ibis, open billed stork, etc. Among the 150 species of birds, many can be watched during winter.

Best time to visit:

The best time to visit the sanctuary remains during winters from December to February. While basking in the sun, you can enjoy watching the wildlife of the area.

You can accommodate in the hotels in Agartala or Udaipur. Gumati Yatri Niwas, Matabari Pantha Niwas, Ginger Hotel and Rajdhani Hotel are some of the best hotels in the state.

How to reach the park?

  • By Air: The nearest airport is Singervill airport that is located in Agartala, 100 km away. It is connected to Guwahati, Kolkata, Chennai, Mumbai, Pune, New Delhi, etc. You can take private vehicle from the airport to reach the park.
  • By Road: You can take buses from Agartala that takes you to the park. Regular buses ply from Silchar, Guwahati, Shillong, Dharmanagar, Kolkata, etc.
  • By Railway: In the recent past, trains have been introduced in the state. So you can board the train from Lumding or Guwahati to reach Tripura. The nearest railheads are at Kumarghat and Dharmanagar that are connected with Lumding and Guwahati.

Sepahijala Zoological Park that was established in 1972 and the Botanical Garden displaying various plants and the Nature Interpretation Center that offers an educative value on ecotourism to children and others are very significant part of your journey.

But the most wonderful spot is the 'Amrit Sagar' lake that has boating facilities. It is surrounded by green forests. The tree house is a must-view and the garden in front of it leading to the lake will drive you crazy. There are separate picnic spots which are surrounded by rubber plantation and palm trees.
