This sanctuary was established in the year 1987 with the primary purpose of preserving crocodiles, especially the marsh crocodiles.

The sanctuary is a paradise for the wild lovers. Interestingly located on the banks of the River Godavari, it is the home to a number of fresh water crocodiles or marsh crocodiles throughout Indo Gangetic plain.

These are also known as Mugger Crocodiles. The word mugger is derived from the term "mugger fish" that is very renowned in the country. One of the special features of these creatures is that these can crawl considerable distances on land as compared to their counterpart salt water crocodiles. These are equally mobile on land and water; and hence become the most important tourist attraction in the sanctuary.

Area and Location:

The sanctuary truly appears like a haven immersed in nature's splendor. It stretches over an area of 36.29 sq km and falls in Alidabad and Karimnagar districts. It is situated at a distance of 20 km, 50 km and 80 km from Manthani, Mancherial and Karimnagar respectively.

Unique Feature:

The perennial basin in Godavari River, home for Marsh Crocodile or Mugger is the unique feature of this wildlife sanctuary.

Main Attractions:

Sivaram wildlife sanctuary boasts of exotic flora and fauna that is able to attract many tourists across the country. The floral species include Gumpena, Terminalias, Teak, Timan, Kodsha and Thorny Shrub also enriches the park. Riverine forests mixed with Teak, Bamboo, Anogeissus, Cassia can also be found here.

The faunal species include Marsh Crocodile, Langur, Nilgai, Cheetal, Sambar, Spotted Deer, Rhesus Monkey, Panther, Sloth bear, Wild Boar, Chausingha, etc. A view of Crocodiles basking in the sun is really delightful. The Mugger Crocodile that is noticed here can be found in the Indo-Gangetic Rivers like the Godavari.

Preferable time to visit:

The most preferable time to visit the sanctuary is during the winters. Thus December to April remains the best time when you can watch the best wildlife. Take a jungle safari in order to experience the best view of the jungle life.

  • By Air: Hyderabad airport is the nearest airport from the park.
  • By Road: Mancherial is the nearest railway station that is only 50 km away from the sanctuary.
  • By Railway: By well maintained railways, the sanctuary is connected to all the major cities in Andhra Pradesh.
