The tourism industry of Tripura has been rapidly growing in the last few years. It is a hilly state in the North-Eastern India which is marked for its unparallel beauty and serenity. Trishna wildlife sanctuary, one of the significant sanctuaries in the state is remarkable for the richness of its vegetation and wildlife conservation. Its educative value is equally important for the school children, botanists, environmentalist and tourists.

In the year 1988, the sanctuary was notified as a wildlife sanctuary. It was established with the primary object of protecting and conserving the wild animal known as bison, which is also the focus of attention here.

Area and location:

The sanctuary encompasses an area of 194.704 sq km. which comprises of 27 revenue Moujas of Belonia, Udaipur and Sonamura Civil Sub-Division in South Tripura District. It is located at a distance of 18 km from the sub-divisional town of Belonia and 95 km from Agartala via Sonamura and 100 km from Udaipur.

Main attractions:

Flora: You can experience in-situ and ex-situ conservation of vegetation and wildlife in the Trishna wildlife sanctuary. The forest area can be divided into 3 parts like dense forests (62%), degraded forests (18%) and bush (20%). The main type of vegetation that are commonly found here are East Himalayan lower bhabar salt, savanah wood land, tropical semi evergreen forests, moist mixed deciduous forest, etc.

You will be surprised to know about the floral diversity of the area. There are 230 tree species, 110 types of shrubs, 150 climber spices and 400 herbs. There are a lot of species that have medicinal value.

Terminalia chebula (Hartaki), Terminalia belerica (Bahera), Artocarpus chaplasha (Chamal), Syzigium cumini (Jam), Ficus species, Sterculia villosa (Udal), Dilennia petagyna (Hargazha), Caraya arborea (Kumira), Shorea robusta (Sal) are the main tree species in the area.

Fauna: There are a large number of wild animals whose activities would keep you occupied during the trip. Fishes, reptiles, birds, mammals and amphibians- all these are found in considerable numbers here. Amphibians like Indian Bul frog, Tree frog, Kunobang, fishes like Cirrnina mrigala (Mrigal), Pautius Sophole (Puti), Labeo rohita (Rui) and birds like Indian Black drongo, Parrot, Tailer bird, Hornbill, White breasted king Fisher, Jungle Myna, Eagle, Red Jungle Fowl, Dove etc. will enthrall you.

Mammals such as Trachypithecus phayrie(Spectacle langur), Hylobates hoolock (Hoolock Gibbon), Panthera pardus (Leopard), Macacca mulatta (Lalmukh Bandar), Trachypithecus pileatus (Capped Langur), Sus scrofa (Wild boar), Bos gaurus (Indian Bison), Felis chaus (Wild cat), etc. will leave you spell bound.

Best time to visit:

The climate is moderate with the summers being a little bit hot. The area experiences a max rainfall of 508.20 ml. in July and 03.58 ml. in December. The temperature ranges from 37.7c.c. in June(Summer) to 6.8c.c.(Winter) in January. You can visit the sanctuary throughout the year except in June when it is extremely hot and in winter.


You can accommodate at Forest Rest House Rajnagar, Van Mahal at Belonia and Revenue Dak Bunglow at Rajnagar. Otherwise you can accommodate in hotels like Rajdhani Hotel and Ginger Hotel in Agartala, Gumati Yatri Niwas in Udaipur, etc.

How to reach the park?

The nearest airport is Agartala Airport at Agartala, the capital city which is 107 km away from the park. Whether you stay at Udaipur, agartala or Sonamura, you can take buses that regularly ply to Belonia. From belonia you can hire auto rickshaw.

The nearest railhead is also Agartala Railway Station that is located in the area named Badharghat.

Along with so much of wildlife attractions, you can view the natural lake and adjacent forest area from the watchtowers erected in the area. A walk to the Garjan natural forests will refresh your mind.
